When can not one give blood?

EWS Under certain circumstances, the donation of blood can not be authorized at the moment. These are the situations that require the deferment of the levy.

As a reminder, a blood donor must be over 18 years of age and under 66 years old and have a minimum weight of 50 kg.

In which cases is it necessary to postpone the donation?

A stay abroad

If you traveled to one of these European countries or to one of these regions between May and November, you have to wait 28 days after your return before giving blood.

• Albania: all the territory
• Italy: Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Sardinia
• Greece: the part connected to the continent but also the islands (Evia and Samos)
• Croatia: all the territory
• Macedonia: the whole territory
• Romania: all the territory
• Serbia: all the territory

If you have traveled outside Europe, you have to wait 28 days after the return but it can go up to six months according to the destination.

A medical examination

If you have had an endoscopy or a coeloscopy: the donation will be postponed from two to four months, depending on the endoscope model used (rigid or flexible).

A surgical intervention

• After a small operation: two months
• After a larger operation: four months

Care and treatment

• After a blood transfusion: four months
• After a visit to the dentist: one day after a filling, seven days after an extraction.
• Acupuncture sessions: at least four months, unless they have been performed by a recognized specialist or doctor.

A tattoo or a piercing

It must wait at least four months after completion.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

It is forbidden to give blood for the duration of the pregnancy and the first six months after delivery, as well as during breastfeeding.


• Fever and a viral or bacterial infection: you can give your blood two weeks after your recovery.

Tick ??bites

If you have been bitten by a tick in the last 24 hours or if the tick has not been removed within 24 hours: the blood donation must be postponed for three months.

A new sexual partner

It takes four months.

• Proscar (finasteride), Avodart (dutasteride): one month
• Neotigason: two years
